Before You Book Lip Filler, Read What They Measured
Two research teams measured what changes in an aging lip. What they did not find is the part worth knowing, and it is in plastic surgery's own journal.

You know roughly what it costs, that it is a gel and a needle, that it does not last forever. You have looked at women your own age who have had it and tried to work out whether you can tell.
What nobody hands you is the part that got measured.
The sentence a surgical team published and the category walked past
A group at the University of Freiburg compared twenty upper lips, ten from people under forty and ten from people over eighty, in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery [live link].
What they did not find was the thing the category is built on. Their conclusion says the aged look comes from a loss of elasticity and a drooping upper lip "rather than to often-postulated but unproven total volume loss."
Often postulated. Unproven. That is a plastic surgery journal describing the premise you were handed as a fact.
The same group went at it again with MRI, thirty women aged twenty to thirty five against thirty aged sixty five to eighty [live link]. The lip was thinner and redistributed toward length. No total volume loss.
What is actually in the syringe
A clear gel.
The first filler approved in the United States specifically for lips is crosslinked hyaluronic acid in buffered saline [live link]. There is no color in it.
Color is not on the label. The FDA indication is augmentation, and the trial that won it measured fullness [live link].
Can a good injector work the edge? Yes [live link]. What it does not do is reverse the change underneath, and the result is temporary: FDA labeling states effectiveness for at least six months [live link].
None of which is an accusation.
Three things changed, and all three were measured
The color faded. The red of a lip is blood seen through a thin surface, not pigment. Cadaver work counting vessels in lip tissue found their number falling with age [live link].
The edge softened. The muscle thinned, its curve flattened, and the ridge that made the border crisp stopped being one.
The scaffolding thinned. Collagen and hyaluronan in the vermilion fall with age [live link].
The premise names none of them. One of the three can be addressed at a bathroom sink, and the next section measures whether that is worth anything.
The number the beauty aisle never quotes
Researchers photographed 289 women aged twenty to sixty nine and measured how much redder each woman's lip was than the skin around it [live link]. Not how red the lip was. The difference.
That difference falls steadily with age.
They then made two versions of one face, identical except for contrast. In 93 percent of trials people picked the higher contrast version as the younger [live link].
Nobody in this file came for a procedure
In a complete census of 8,249 of its own reviews, and across all 2,463 on Trustpilot, the words filler, injection and Botox appear zero times. Not rarely. Zero.
The woman who does turn up, over and over, stopped wearing lip color years ago, and says so with her age attached.
Of the thirty nine customers who state an explicit age in that census, thirty three are sixty five or older.
Now the part a brochure would cut
The effect is small: faces with higher contrast were judged about 1.3 years younger on average, and the manipulation moved eyebrows and eyes along with lips.
And fullness is genuinely on the list of things that read as age. A study of Danish twins and British women in this age range found lip height independently associated with how old the women looked [live link]. It argues against this article, which is why it is here.
Lip color contrast is one of the things the eye reads. It is measurable. It falls with age. And of the three measured changes above, it is the one a cosmetic lip color can visibly address.
Two things that cost this page the sale
It does not last all day. Reapplication is the most common thing customers raise, at roughly one review in seven.
And on a very thin lip, color alone can make the thinness more visible rather than less. A customer wrote it better:

What a tube can actually do
Instead of resting a colored layer on the surface, a near colorless dye deposits color in the outer surface layers of the lip.
The pigment is CI 45410, close to colorless in the bullet, developing on contact with the moisture and pH of the lip, carried in a balm base of squalane, jojoba seed oil and vitamin E.
Almost everyone gets a similar soft tint. Reviewers report it as a complaint: they expected a dramatic shade and got a muted rose. If you want a statement color, this is not it.
Now read that again as a woman with a drawer of tubes bought once and abandoned. Every one was a decision made at a counter against a mouth that had quietly changed. A tint that arrives without a decision is the thing being sold.
