Surgeons Measured Aging Lips. They Did Not Find Total Volume Loss.
If you have ever wondered what actually changes in a lip as it ages, there is a small body of published work almost nobody outside plastic surgery has read.

Underneath the age related version of lip filler sits a premise, stated so often it stopped sounding like a claim. Lips lose volume as you age. So you put volume back.
One research group went and measured whether that is true, twice, two different ways.
What they actually found
A group at the University of Freiburg examined twenty lip specimens, ten from people under forty and ten from people over eighty, in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery [link].
They found real change. What they did not find was the thing everybody expected. Their conclusion is that the aged look comes from a loss of elasticity and a drooping upper lip "rather than to often-postulated but unproven total volume loss."
Often postulated. Unproven.
The same group went at it again with MRI, thirty women aged twenty to thirty five against thirty aged sixty five to eighty [link]. Same answer: thinner, redistributed toward length, no loss of total volume.
So what did change
Something obviously changed. Nobody looks in the mirror at sixty and sees the mouth they had at thirty. There are three measured answers, and volume is not one of them.
The color faded, and the reason is plumbing. The red of a lip is blood seen through a thin surface, not pigment. Researchers examining vermilion tissue found the number and total area of its blood vessels falling measurably with age [link].
The edge softened, and the reason is muscle. The muscle under the lip thins, its curve flattens, and the edge stops being sharp.
The scaffolding thinned. Collagen and hyaluronan in the upper lip vermilion decrease with age [link].
What is actually in the syringe
Hyaluronic acid filler is a clear gel [link]. There is no color in it.
Color is not on the label. The approved indication is augmentation, and the trial that won it measured fullness.
A good injector can work the border, and good ones do [link]. What that does not do is reverse the change underneath, and the result is temporary: FDA labeling states effectiveness for at least six months [link].
None of that is an accusation.
The measurement nobody in the beauty aisle quotes
Researchers photographed 289 women aged twenty to sixty nine and measured how much redder each woman's lips were than the skin around them [link]. Not how red. The difference.
That difference falls steadily with age.
They then made two versions of one face, identical except for facial contrast, and asked people to pick the younger. In ninety three percent of trials they picked the higher contrast version.
The women who had already stopped
No customer in this brand's file arrived through a conversation about injectables. In a complete census of 8,249 reviews, and across all 2,463 on Trustpilot, the words filler, injection and Botox appear zero times.
The woman in that file, in quantity, stopped wearing lip color years ago because she could never get the shade right, unprompted and with her age attached.
Thirty three of the thirty nine customers who state an age in that census are sixty five or older.
The honest version of what that means
The effect is not dramatic. Faces with higher contrast were judged about 1.3 years younger on average, and the manipulation moved eyebrows and eyes along with lips.
And lip fullness is genuinely on the list of things that read as age. A study of Danish twins and British women in this age range found lip height independently associated with how old women looked for their age [link]. It argues against this article, which is why it is here.
Lip color contrast is one of the things the eye reads. It is measurable. It falls with age. And of the three measured changes discussed here, it is the one a cosmetic lip color can visibly address.
Why the usual answers do not work
Liner draws a replacement for an edge that is no longer there, and it reads as drawn on the moment it moves. A darker shade fakes saturation, which needs the firm edge that went. Both manage a layer of colored wax resting on the surface, and a layer on the surface needs a border to contain it.
The other way to put color on a lip
Instead of resting a colored layer on the surface, a near colorless dye deposits color in the outer surface layers of the lip.
The pigment is CI 45410. In the bullet it is close to colorless, and it develops on contact with the moisture at the surface of the lip. It is carried in a balm base of squalane, jojoba seed oil and vitamin E.
Almost everyone gets a similar soft tint. Reviewers say so, sometimes as a complaint: they expected a dramatic shade shift and got a muted rose.
Now read that again as a woman with a drawer of tubes bought once and abandoned. The same soft tint every time, with nothing to choose, is not the limitation. It is the entire point.
It can still be too pink for you, or too faint. What it cannot do is ask you to pick wrong first.

If what you want is a fuller lip, nothing in a tube is going to give you that, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling.
It does not last all day either. Wear time is the single most common thing customers raise, at roughly one review in seven, and it needs putting back on.
